What Larry 'Lawnchair' Walters teaches us about launching a service-based website

In 1982, Larry “Lawnchair” Walters in the midst of boredom strapped 42 helium balloons to a lawn chair, expecting to hover 30 feet above his backyard. Instead, he shot up a whopping 15,000 feet - into airline flight paths. Yes, oddly enough pilots did spot this very unusual citing, the daring dreamer, Larry Walters.

Larry was prepared though, he had, in fact, hatched a rough strategy in anticipation of a planned descent. But not before enjoying a snack and a beverage, of course. He packed a six-pack of beer, some sandwiches, a CB radio, and pellet guns to shoot the helium balloons when it came time to come back down. Mission accomplished. And descend he did, safely, and rather unscathed, though he had granted landed amidst some power lines.

His longtime girlfriend (now wife), Carol Van Deusen, assisted with the setup. She served as his ground crew, CB radio in hand, and one can only imagine what was going through her mind as her partner disappeared into the sky.

Larry’s story made a lasting impact, inspiring generations of visionary pursuits.

Today, Larry’s original lawn chair, with the 42 balloons, nicknamed “Inspiration I,” is now part of the collection at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C.

It's this fearless navigation that often inspires me as an entrepreneur. It takes determination, passion, and a whole lot of grit to navigate the waters of running a small business. Larry exemplifies how he had the helium but lacked a clear flight path.

At Silver and Bloom Studio, we ensure your business doesn’t just 'take off'; it reaches the right destination. Here’s How We Extract the Unique Points of View That Keep You Out of the Power Lines!

The Creative Extractionist Method: Five Questions That Clarify Your Authentic Positioning

  1. What inspired you to start your business, vision, or craft? Reflect on the unique seed that only you can nurture. Has your vision evolved over time, or does it remain unchanged? Share the essence of what drives you and how it shapes your approach.

  2. Which 1-5 services or projects ignite your passion? Describe the tangible aspects of these offerings that resonate with your authentic self. How do these align with your values and mission, ensuring that your work feels true to who you are?

  3. What core problem does your service solve? Consider the impact your vision has on your audience. What insights do you offer that fulfill a need or curiosity? How do you foster meaningful engagement and learning outcomes for those you serve?

  4. What essential element defines your service, and what would happen if it were removed? Identify the unique aspect that sets you apart in your niche. What would it mean for your brand if this element were absent, and how does it contribute to your authenticity?

  5. What deliberate actions do you take to ensure you uphold your authentic process and make a meaningful impact? Explore the practices, principles, or rituals that guide your work. How do these contribute to your integrity and the trust you build with your audience (client/ customer)?

We start with the seed, where your foundation is strongest and holds weight. This provides direction for Silver and Bloom Studio to build a site that positions your vision effectively. I want to feel what drives you and makes your work truly tick!

No “one-size-fits-all” solutions here. I'm not interested in working within a box; I want to work outside of it, starting from a foundation that is strong and untamed, positioning you from a place of strength that sets the pillars to define and connect with your market authentically. Take a look at our recently launched site www.infinityinfusions.com where we repositioned IV therapy services as part of a trusted health clinic in the Tamworth, NSW region.

Just like Larry's wife Carol, I am with you every step of the way. At Silver and Bloom Studio, we recognize that the most potent parts of your brand are often the ones you’ve become too close to see. Perhaps you have a seed and story but are unsure about website navigation for authority placement and what makes a cohesive, human-led narrative that connects with your ideal user base. Our Creative Extractionist process is designed to uncover the invisible, human-led stories that AI cannot replicate and generic strategies cannot reach.

Fearless navigation is something I understand not only from working with various small businesses, but also as a practising artist for over twenty years. Visionary pursuits require targeted strategy. Originality is the rare and valuable note that makes a brand sing, and authenticity defines how you deliver your digital sanctuary. You cannot automate authenticity. You may now be able to automate a song, but not its delivery, emotional resonance, or human connection.

We strip away the noise to reveal the core architecture of your authority. Your knowledge graph then becomes your positioning power online and the blueprint for attracting your clients authentically. When you feel comfortable in your foundation, it builds a strength that can withstand any forecasted adversity — one that your clients will trust.

Is it time to take the hot seat and let an idea you’ve been sitting on take flight online, or are you ready for a refresh that aligns with your authentic positioning now?

Are you ready for a cleaner launch and a stronger landing?
